Photo Competition

Currently Accepting Submissions

The upcoming AAG Annual Meeting will once again include the Cultural Geography Specialty Group’s Photo Competition. All registered attendees, virtual or in-person, are invited to contribute a photograph of their own. Participation is not limited to CGSA members.

To contribute, please submit a high quality (approximately 300dpi) digital copy of your photograph (limit of 1) with a caption (limit of 250 words) to this form by 11:59 PM Pacific Time (PT) on Friday, February 24, 2023. The photographs may be in either color or black & white, and must have been taken by the person submitting to the competition. (Alternate link to form: https://forms.gle/AXGbs5fnzy5wMoAp8).

This year the approved submissions will be exhibited and credited virtually (link to gallery coming soon!). The top photograph – as judged by a panel – will be published in Material Culture: The Journal of the International Society for Landscape, Place, and Material Culture. Thus photos submitted for this competition should not be considered for publication in a journal and cannot already be formally published elsewhere. Judges will take both the photograph and captions into consideration. Photo evaluation criteria includes relevance to cultural geography, creativity, technical quality, and composition and color. In addition to the judges’ selection, the broader community is invited to participate in a “People’s Choice” judging, selecting an additional submission to be published in Material Culture. Both winners will be announced during the CGSA business meeting in Denver.

Please feel free to circulate this call for participation among potentially interested colleagues. Direct questions to Adam Regula at aregula1@kent.edu.
